The Grade 7 Team

Parents evening: 7th February 2012:
1. Good Evening and Welcome to our information evening.
We would like to say a special word of welcome to the new parents who have joined our Montrose Primary family. We hope that your stay at Montrose will be a pleasant experience.

2. It gives me great pleasure to introduce my dynamic Grade Seven Team:
Mrs Sherratt 7D – Economic Management Sciences and Natural Sciences
Mrs van den Bergh 7C – Arts and Culture and Afrikaans
Mr Stephenson 7B – Technology and Social Sciences
Miss Maivha 7A – Grade facilitator and Mathematics
      (Mathematics Learning Area Manager)

3. The other learning area specialist teachers are:
English – Ms Callander (H.O.D Life Orientation)
Human Movement – Miss Hubbard and Mr Leaf - Wright
        Zulu – Mr Makara
        Computers – Mr Heine

You as the parents are very important stakeholders in the education process and often your child’s success depends on your level of motivation, in-put and dedication to making sure your child understands the importance of being responsible for themselves.

4.  Responsibility
Grade seven learners are completely Learning Area taught and
move from teacher to teacher. Please encourage them to pack their school bags the night before; too many of them carry unnecessary books and stationery that is not needed every day, as this too is not good for their backs. Please ensure that your child knows their full name, residential address, telephone numbers, this should all be filled in the front of the Montrose Primary diary, it is very important that all phone numbers are correct late,……………(explain why!)
•    Left at school till late.
•    Accidents.
Teachers will be checking these diaries to check that all information are correct and also to see that homework is written properly.

5. Starting and Pick up times
School starts at 07:20.
If you happen to be running late, please bring your child to the front office on arrival, and sign your child in.
We do understand that there are some circumstances that are beyond control, but please conform to the rules.
School ends at 13:30; please do not pick up your child later than 14:00 unless they are attending an extra curricular activity. If you are going to be late, please enroll your child at aftercare, Mrs. Carbarns, if you would like details, please contact the school office.
If your child is at school late, till an unreasonable hour, he/she will be taken to the police station where your child will be safer, that sitting at an empty school.
Please ensure your child is at school promptly on a Wednesday as Assessments are written on these days. The assessment stars at 7:30 am and ends at 8:25 am, if your child arrives late, they will not be given any additional time. If your child is late on any other day, they will forfeit the first lesson, so as not disrupt the other learners in class.

6.  Money
All money must be placed in an envelope with all the necessary information on it. (Child’s name and surname, class, amount and occasion i.e. KWAZULU NATAL TOUR or CAPE TOUR). Please also attempt to send the correct amount.
NB = Should you pay the office please notify the teacher as we keep a record of who has paid, we do not always have time to check with the office on a daily basis.

7.  Cell Phones
Cell phones are not permitted at Montrose Primary School. Any cell phone brought onto the school premises will be confiscated, and returned to the legal guardian at the end of that school term.
Parents, I urged you to monitor what your child has access to via their cell phones.
MXIT and Facebook are not only means of communication, but also a means to bullying peers at school. We are not held liable of anything occurring via these or any other type of communication method between your children.
If your child is caught with a cell phone, you will be contacted and informed that the phone has been confiscated until the end of term.

8. Channels of Communication
I encourage you to make contact with your child’s teacher and please inform them of any circumstances that might be pertinent to your child’s well being. Please follow the correct channels of communication: Class teacher or Learning Area Manager, Miss Maivha – Grade Facilitator, Miss Langkilde – H.O.D Intersen Phase, Mrs. Van Loggerenberg – Deputy Principal and then finally Mrs. Buschberger - Principal.
If you wish to make an interview with one of the teachers, please do
so via the office. Each teacher has allocated times, a morning and an afternoon to allow meetings to take place without any interruptions.
If you miss a meeting with a teacher, please reschedule that meeting through contacting the office.
Please avoid quick meetings after or before school with the teacher, as all the staff have to get to extra-murals or meetings, and we can not be late.

9.  School Uniform
Please ensure that your child uniform is clearly marked with his/her name. Correct uniform is to be worn at all times, both at school and on the sports field. The blazer is a compulsory part of the school uniform, and is to be worn every singe day.
The girls may only wear brown or yellow hair bands in their hair.
Jewellery -     Earrings, small little studs, no diamante earrings.
Only religious chains may be worn, it may not be visible.

10. Extra-Curricular Activities
We encourage your child to participate in at least one of the activities
on the School enrichment programme each term, this is very important for their overall development. A support programme will be starting shortly, the relevant learners have been informed already.

11. Parents Library
There are superb books on a variety of parent topics in our schools
Media Centre. We urge you to please use this facility. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Hartnack.
Please make all effort to attend all parents evening/talks. These talks are sourced for parents to inform them about the child of today and how to deal with certain issues.

12. Weekly newsletter, website and school communicator.
Parents are encouraged to read the newsletter every Tuesday as this is a way of communicating with parents informing the about the important information regarding the well being of our school. At the moment Grade Sevens parents are to be aware of entrance and scholarship exams (Open Day) for Grade 8 2013. Brescia House open day is on the 11th February, St Teresa 18th February and Treverton College 3rd March.

13. Bringing lunches and items to school
Parents are to report to the office. Parents are not allowed to go to classes during teaching times as it causes disruptions in the classrooms.

14. General
Assessment - Is done continually through out the year; this is according to policy. Please note that if your child misses a cycle assessment, they will receive zero without a doctor’s letter explaining his/her absenteeism. The onus is upon your child to catch up any missed work, and not the teacher’s responsibility to do so for them. If your child is absent for three or more days, or is absent on a Monday or Friday, a doctors certificate will be required on his/ her arrival back to school.

Homework – (EXPLAIN AND SHOW HOMEWORK DIARY TO PARENTS / GUARDIANS)
Learners will receive English, Afrikaans and Mathematics homework daily. Homework is consolidation of what is being covered in class at that present time. Homework diaries need to be signed daily by parents or guardians, not only the aftercare teachers. All learners are given enough time to copy down their daily homework per lesson; it’s up to them to write their homework down and NOT the teachers.
NB: Maths Mental and English spelling tests will be written every Friday. . Please note that if your child misses a cycle assessment, they will receive zero without a doctor’s letter explaining his/her absenteeism.

Learning Area – your child’s books will go home on a regular basis, for parental perusal, please do not write in your child’s books if you have any queries; rather write on a piece of paper or in their diary.

Valentine Market: Thanking all the parents in advance and to please understand that every learner has to contribute to this project as they are working in groups.

Tickey Afternoon: To inform parents that Tickey Afternoon is on the last Saturday in October and it is a Grade 7 Fundraiser where every learner and parents\guardians needs to play their part. Detailed letter about tickey afternoon will be sent home in Second term.
